Since 31st August, 1991 Kyrgyzstan has been an independent Republic, which is divided into 6 government regions: Bishkek and Chu-Valley, Jalal-Abad Region, Naryn Region, Osh Region, Talass Region, Issyk-Kul Lake Region with Karakol. The head of state is the president, who is elected by the people for a 5 year term. At the moment the president is Askar Akayev.

The executive is held by a Cabinet of ministers, which is chaired by the Prime Minister. On the recommendation of the Prime Minister the president appoints the Cabinet. The President also appoints the Prime Minister.

The legislative is the Supreme Parliament ("Jogorku Kenesh"), which consists of two Houses: the continuous Legislative Assembly consisting of 35 deputies; and the Assembly of People's Representatives consisting of 70 deputies and working on a sessional basis.

The judiciary is the National Court of Justice, which Members (Judges) are appointed by Parliament on the recommendation of the president for a 10 year term. The National Constitutional Court and Supreme Court control the system.
